Honoured and grateful beyond words to win the Asher Literary Award last night for my book ENEMY.
Congratulations to fellow recipient Libby Hathorn and to other shortlisted authors Leah Kaminsky, J.H. Crone and Kelly Gardiner for their excellent books.
Much of ENEMY relied on interviews with veterans who shared with me the impact war had on their lives, and the lives of those they loved. For their vulnerability, openness and honesty, I would like to express my deepest gratitude.
To be recognised on Remembrance Day with an award for books with an anti-war theme, feels especially meaningful. I thank the judges Joan Beaumont, Barbara Horgan and Tony Maniaty very much for choosing my book, and for giving their time to read all the entries.
Thank you also to Cate Blake and the team from Penguin Books Australia and to my agent Grace Heifetz from Curtis Brown. Also to my wonderful readers Jeanette Fyffe, Anna Henry, Dana Wong (who also loaned me her beautiful dress for the night!), Troy Holland, Tony Wilson, Sarah Oliver, Shane Lazzo and my writing group Magdalena McGuire, Julie Twohig and Elisabeth Hanscombe.
And to my darling husband Matt, for believing in me even when I didn’t.
Thank you also to to the Australian Society of Authors for putting on such a great night! Yay!
